Restylane® : FAQ

Q) What is Restylane®?
A) Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Q) What should patients do prior to treatment?
A) Restylane® requires no pre-testing, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with your physician. He or she may consider prescribing a medication to minimize recurrence.

Q) How is Restylane® different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
A) Unlike rooster –derived hyaluronic acid-based products, Restylane® is free from animal proteins. This quality limits any risk of animal–based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Restylane® contains trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and should not be used by patients with a history of allergies to such material. Additionally, Restylane® has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid-available in dermal filler.

Q) Is any of the material left in the skin after it has dissolved?
A) No. Unlike permanent fillers, Restylane® is completely dissolved. Over time, NASHA (non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid) gel is eliminated by the body, leaving absolutely no trace of the injected material.

Q) Are there any side effects?
A) As with any injection, some common injection related reactions might occur. The most common side effects are temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These typically resolve within two to three days.

Q) How often should I have Restylane® treatments done?
A) Treatments are typically scheduled twice a year. Having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated may enhance the lasting effect.

Q) Can Restylane® be used anywhere on the face?
A) Restylane® has been used in more than 1.5 million treatments in over 60 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. In the U.S. the FDA has approved Restylane® for wrinkles and folds like the ones from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Your doctor will consult with you prior to your injection regarding common treatment areas.

Q) How is Restylane® different from Botox Cosmetic©?
A) Restylane® is natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox Cosmetic© is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products.

Restylane®: Pre - Post Care Treatment

If you have any previous history of cold sores or herpes simplex viruses please notify your physician prior to treatment, they may recommend a preventative such as Valtrex, Acyclovir, or Zovirax.

Be aware that aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (includes Advil?, Aspirin, Aleve?), vitamin E, Alcoholic beverages, and Ginkgo Balboa can thin the blood and may increase the possibility of bleeding or bruising. These should not be taken one week prior to treatment to decrease risk.

Tylenol is a pain reliever without anti-inflammatory properties, and therefore can safely be used for pain control before or after treatment.

Prescription topical; anesthetic (numbing cream) may be purchased in advance of treatment and used one hour prior to treatment or “dental Block” may be used in office depending on sensitivity of the area /or individual.

If you bruise easily, you may begin using sublingual Arnica (purchased at a health food store) several days prior to treatment.

To minimize swelling ice may be applied, do not leave ice on area more than 15 minutes at a time. If bruising occurs this should fade within a few days.

Immediate results may differ from how the area looks in a few days due to possible swelling. A touch up may be necessary within a few weeks after initial treatment to achieve the desired results.

After treatment, you should minimize exposure of the treated area to excessive sun, tanning beds, and extreme cold weather until any initial swelling or redness has gone away.

The results are temporary and continued treatment is recommended every 6 to 12 months. Having a treatment before the product has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect, maintain fullness and esthetic correction.

If you are planning on having any other cosmetic procedure preformed within a week of injection, please get clearance from you physician.
